Seven Guitars

by August Wilson

directed by Clinton Turner Davis

In a Pittsburgh tenement a charismatic and volatile blues singer fights for his dignity in a backyard full of song, dance, mystery, vegetables, gorgeous poetry, comedy and one doomed rooster.

Murray says: “August Wilson wrote ten plays (one for each decade) chronicling the lives of Black Americans in the 20th century—and we have produced three of them. It’s the greatest American dramatic achievement of the last century. Seven Guitars is my favorite; it is so rich in language, song, and character; it’s hilarious, sexy, sad and deeply affirmative. Daily struggle and magic ritual come together and transform a dusty patch into radiant life.”
